Intern for NYC and DC Offices
Job Summary
We are looking for an intern for both our New York City and Washington, D.C., offices to work within our different program areas. Specific placements will be based on candidates’ interests and the organization’s needs. Interns must be flexible and able to work independently. Work areas include, but are not limited to the following areas. Note: These descriptions cover the tasks assigned to each area, not the job duties of interns.
Capital Formation: Structures vehicles to attract, aggregate and deploy capital to create opportunities and improve the quality of life in disadvantaged urban communities
Knowledge & Evaluation: Ensures that Living Cities remains on track with its strategic plan and meets the priority members have placed on knowledge sharing and evaluation
Policy: Provides a framework that aligns local, state and federal policies and the roles of the public, private and philanthropic sectors to support cities, neighborhoods and individual opportunity
Program: Sets Living Cities’ programmatic agenda, and oversees the development and implementation of the organization’s grant-making portfolio in order to drive a localized integrative approach
Communications: Developing strategies and executing the communications of Living Cities’ brand and work.
Job Responsibilities could include one or many of the following:
- Research on topics and issues in community development as well as innovative programs and policies
- Research on methods of financing community development initiatives in fields such as affordable housing, health and education
- Survey of industry trends and new innovations
- Exploration of new ideas and potential new approaches for funding community development ventures
- Supporting the outreach to federal, state and local officials
- Development of research reports, policy briefs and other related communications
- Identification and formulation of strategies for engaging new funders and attracting new grants and loans or other investments to Living Cities
- Contract and grant management
- Preparation for annual and semiannual board meetings
- Providing general administrative support
Job Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in urban and public affairs or related fields
- Students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree preferred; minimum 3.5 GPA
- Excellent communication and research skills
- Exposure to project work plans, grant applications and research reports useful, but not essential
- Ability to work independently with little supervision and willingness to learn and develop new skills
- Computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheets and Internet research
- Applicants should be available a minimum of 20 hours per week during semesters and 35 hours per week over the summer.
