In January 2011, Living Cities hosted the Sustainable Communities Boot Camp in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard University. Teams of government, nonprofit and business leaders from thirteen metropolitan regions across the country participated; these regions were among 45 that HUD awarded a total of $98 million through its Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program.
The boot camp was designed to build the capacity of participants to:
- Use economic strategy to drive sustainability and equity;
- Harness capital to realize the regional vision;
- Ensure meaningful and inclusive long-term participation; and
- Ground efforts in real-time data to advance desired outcomes.
Living Cities engaged the Institute for Sustainable Communities, a Vermont-based nonprofit that specializes in building capacity for sustainable development at the community scale, to lead the design and management of this intensive peer-learning workshop.
