Leveraging Funds
Living Cities has a long and sustained record of investing to improve the lives of low-income people and the cities in which they live.
Funds from Living Cities' Members
At inception, we brought together foundations and financial institutions—some of the biggest in the world—to launch a new approach to aggregating capital for philanthropic use. Since then, we have invested more than $600 million and made a demonstrable difference for people throughout the nation. With a remarkable 29:1 ratio, Living Cities has leveraged that $600 million into more than $16 billion of tangible results—from building stores to schools, creating safe and affordable options for child care, establishing health and job-training centers and much more.
Public Funds
In 1993, Living Cities and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) established an unprecedented public-private partnership, providing a 3-to-1, private sector-to-government match. To date, these funds have flowed through nonprofit intermediaries, Enterprise Community Partners and Local Initiatives Support Corporation, to community groups in cities across the country. In turn, local organizations have leveraged the millions of federal dollars provided into billions through private sector, state and local matching grants, tax credits, loan guarantees and credit enhancements.
