Cities

Historically, Living Cities has been actively engaged in under-resourced neighborhoods in 23 cities.  We have made long term investments in these places, with a distinct focus on affordable housing.  These place-based programs and projects have been coordinated by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and Enterprise Community Partners, Inc, national intermediary organizations that support community development. An independent study documented that property values, private lending, retail activity and other vital signs of healthy communities improved in nearly all the neighborhoods in which we have been active. Our engagement has improved the quality of life locally, boosted municipal and regional economies, and bolstered America’s competitiveness in the global marketplace.

We are committed to an even more ambitious vision for the future. We will expand aggressively both the focus of our work and the partners who do the work with us. We will continue to improve the quality of the places people live in but put greater emphasis on linking people to the opportunities and choices they need to improve the quality of their lives. That means using the Living Cities’ way of mobilizing public, private and philanthropic leaders to improve health, living wage job opportunities, economic stability, wealth building, education, and environmental sustainability. We will build strong, intermediary organizations, new innovative funding mechanisms and approaches through long-term investment and appropriate public and private sector policy changes.

We will leverage the competitive advantages of cities such as vitality, density of markets, culture, arts, youth, and diversity. We will ride the transformational waves of change driving popular culture such as technology, social networking and climate change.
